On November 9th, 2024, around 4 p.m., Joana Dantas, Master in Audiovisual Communication for New Media, presented the paper “’No Cutaways in the Video game Story’: An Interview Study of the Implications of Cinematography in the Game Narrative.” at the 8th International Conference on Digital Design & Communication, which took place from 7 to 9 November, 2024, at Teatro Gil Vicente and online, Portugal and online.

Using qualitative and semi-structured interviews with 14 game developers, this paper aims to understand how cinematics are made and what procedures are considered in the process. The results reveal the following practices for the application of cinematography in video games: connection and dependence with gameplay, application of shots and camera movements, colour, lighting and editing, similar to the techniques applied in cinema.
